We read headlines, not stories. We react to screenshots, not context. We argue positions we barely understand. And somehow, we call it politics. In Sierra Leone today, tension is rising, not just because of leaders or parties, but because we no longer take time to understand what we read. A statement is made. Someone misinterprets it. Another person shares it. And before long, it becomes true. Not because it’s correct, but because it spreads faster than correction.
We are not lacking information. We are drowning in it. The real problem is comprehension.
When people don’t fully understand what they consume:
- Policies become propaganda
- Opinions become facts
- And disagreements turn into division

A country cannot build democracy on half-understood ideas. Because when comprehension is low, emotions become louder than logic. Until we learn to read beyond the surface, we will keep fighting battles we don’t fully understand.
